My daughter and I just returned home from a study abroad trip with her high school. We spent 12 days travelling in Italy and Spain; two nights in Italy - Rome and Florence - and the rest in Spain - Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia.
This is us in the airport on day 1… before my Scottish skin took a beating from the sun! Yes, I wore sunscreen, but I’m a ginger, so… it sort of works. My daughter thinks I’m a vampire. What can I say?
Oh, the Food and Experience
I, of course, was in it for the food!
That said, I knew it would be a great experience for Phoebe and the other students from her school who went along. Thankfully, a few other parents traveled with us.
I won’t lie. It was a taxing trip and I was glad to have really good walking shoes with me. We walked an average of 17,000 steps a day!
The bonds these kids made and the friendships made among the parents, however, was well worth it. Not to mention the amazing things we saw and delicious food we ate.
Upcoming Newsletters
To that end, and in the spirit of this newsletter, I’ll be spending the next many weeks recreating all (okay, most) of the food we ate along the way. There is no better way to relive an adventure like this than to add the meals to your repertoire and share the food with your friends and family. It’s like extending the adventure and letting those you love in on it, too.
I’m looking forward to recreating all of the great meals and sharing the stories behind the meals with you, here. There will be a little about the trip, a lot about the food and it’s place in culture or history.
Admittedly, we ate some fast food, but those are fun comparisons to make when you travel internationally!
I plan to publish at least every other week around our summer travel schedule but you might get a bonus week. Either way, I’ll be reliving the trip through food and I hope you tag along for the adventure!
